Kimberly Alu: A Trailblazer in Theater, Improv, and Comedy Writing

Kimberly Alu is a dynamic force in the performing arts, celebrated for her contributions as an actress, writer, playwright, improviser, and educator. With an impressive career spanning theater, sketch comedy, and improv, Kimberly has performed at prestigious venues such as Count Basie Center for the Arts, Princeton University, The Players Club, and The Duke on 42nd Street. Her passion for performance and storytelling has made her a standout in theater and comedy communities across New Jersey, New York, and Los Angeles.

Theater and Playwriting Achievements

Originally trained in theater, Kimberly’s work has been recognized on some of the most respected stages. Her short play Jumper earned the Best Original Play award at both the Manhattan Repertory Theater and the Midtown International Theater Festival. Her full-length play Carnival Games received the Best Play award at The Thespis Theater Festival, cementing her reputation as a masterful playwright.

Improv and Sketch Comedy Success

After relocating to Los Angeles, Kimberly made waves in the improv and sketch comedy world. She performed with renowned groups such as Sketch Time Strangers and Sweet Tweets, which was showcased at The Second City Hollywood before Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. Her contributions as a performer and writer elevated the caliber of these productions and demonstrated her versatility in the art of improvisational comedy.

In response to the global lockdown in 2020, Kimberly founded Socially Distant Improv, a digital network that connected improvisers and audiences, keeping the art form alive during challenging times. She has since completed over 40 original sketch comedy pieces, a half-hour comedy pilot, two docu-series, and numerous plays.

Educator and Curriculum Developer

Kimberly’s dedication to education has left a lasting impact on the improv and comedy community. She developed two specialized improv courses, Approach to Dramatic Improv and Advanced Dramatic Improv, for The Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT). Her innovative methods draw from her extensive acting background, providing students with practical tools to excel in performance and storytelling.

At Dallas Comedy Club, Kimberly created and implemented a full comedy curriculum, further showcasing her ability to blend creativity with education. She also curated a variety of Mainstage shows, including her favorite, The Family Funny Interactive Improv Show, which highlights her ability to craft engaging, family-friendly entertainment.

Kimberly’s talents extend to film, with notable roles in Testament (2018), Purgatory Is A House in Connecticut (2021), and Less Than Three (2017). Her ability to adapt to different mediums underscores her diverse skill set and dedication to her craft.
